Heat Loss


The transfer of heat from inside to outside by means of conduction, convection and radiation through all surfaces of a house.

Heel Bead


A sealant or gasket is placed between the window frame and the inside face of the glazing unit prior to installation of the glazing stop to form an airtight and watertight seal.

Hopper window


Hopper window

A bottom-hinged sashed window that typically opens inward from the top. They are commonly installed in bathrooms or basements. Awning windows have become more popular than hooper window, as they are easier to clean and remove screens and deflect rain and snow when open.

Hung Window


Hung Window

A hung window is comprised of an upper and lower sash. A single hung has a fixed non-operational window at the top and a vertical sliding window at the bottom. A double hung has both operational upper and lower sash's. More on hung windows.

J-channel


Extension on the outside of a new window that makes it easier to install siding.

Jambs


A jamb is a piece of material that forms the sides (vertical jambs) and top (top or head jamb)/bottom (bottom or lower jamb) of a window or door. See for more information.

Krypton gas


Krypton gas

Krypton is an odorless, colorless, non-toxic inert gas used in the window manufacturing industry to fill the empty spaces between glass panes. Because of it's properties it will increase insulation and energy efficiency in a window. An alternative to Krypton is Argon, which is cheaper and less efficient as an insulator. A blend of air, krypton and or argon is used by some manufacture to balance cost and performance.

Laminated Glass


Two or more sheets of glass with an inner layer of transparent plastic to which the glass adheres if broken. used for enhanced safety and security, as well as sound reduction.

Lintel


A structural component or beam above a window or door opening that supports the wall above. Also referred to as a header.

Lite


A pane of glass, in windows and doors refers to separately framed panes of glass (as well as designs simulating the look of separately framed pieces of glass).
